Serge Modular Tutorials

Peter Blasser Workshop

Custom synthesizer desiginer and electronic musician Peter Blasser gave an all-day workshop on March 9th, 2015 for ESP, Music Tech, and Composition students. Peter provided the students with kits for his Mr. Grassi paper-circuit syntheiszer and helped the students build their own synths. Peter also gave a presentation on his current work and creative interests.

AirPlay Screen Sharing

The Modular Synth Studio has a large flatscreen that is connected to an AppleTV. This means you can wirelessly display the contents of your laptop screen(Os X 10.10.1 Yosemite or above), iPhone, or iPad on the display. To do so, follow these steps:

1) Turn the TV on and wake the apple TV up.

The silver remote is for the AppleTV and the black remote is for the flat screen.

2) In the menu bar of your operating system, in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, click on the AirPlay icon.

Select B305B screen. Your device’s screen should now appear on the studio display. If you do not see an AirPlay icon in your menubar, make sure AirPlay is enabled in your device preferences.

Pi Speaker Building

In the Fall of 2014, students in the Networked Music Performance Ensemble class built their own speakers. Students cut, put together, painted, sanded and stained speaker cabinets to house the driver and small amplifier. Once the speakers were completed, the class used them in conjunction with Raspberry Pi computers to create networked-based compositions to be performed by the ensemble.

DRS Troubleshooting

Protools – No sound through Genelecs – Make sure that the outputs for each of the channels as well as the master fader in protools is set to “GenelecFront”. Often times, the settings get shuffled around. In the process, the default outputs for newly made tracks are sometimes set to “bus 1-2” or others.

Protools – Cannot Access pre-amps and main-outs – If you do not hear any sound and the inputs and outputs of your channels are greyed-out  then the computer is having trouble communicating with the ProTools hardware.

Setup->Playback EngineMore specifically, The Lynx Auroras and the Appogee converters on the bottom left side of the hardware rack inside the studio. To remedy this situation, check the protools setting:  Setup -> Playback EngineAnd make sure that it is set to HD TDM.

Playback EngineIf HD TDM is not present within the drop down menu, it means that Protools was turned on without the converters having a chance to first communicate with the computer. Temporarily quit protools (and every other program using audio), then restart the Auroras and the Appoges. Now start protools and head back over to the Playback Engine, you should now see HD TDM. Change to it and it’ll prompt a restart of Protools.

C24 – communication problems – If the C24 interface is getting the data from protools (the faders are adjusted to your levels set on your computer and such), however protools does not receive data from the C24 (faders jerking to the computer-set levels and not updating to protools). The C24 must be restarted. Temporarily turn off Protools and the speakers (a switch on the sub powers them). Then restart the C24 by the switch on it’s power supply. It is below the desk. DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE UNDER THE DESK! Restart the speakers and then protools. You should be able to access your channels through the C24 controller.

Accessing “Studio Share”

The ProTools system in the Computer Music Studio (B304) and in the Modular Synth Studio (B305) have the same plugins and basic setup as the DRS. If you would like to continue working on your session outside of the DRS, you can either bring an external hard-drive to copy over your files or use “Studio Share”. On the desktop there is a drive labeled “Studio Share”. As you have done with with the drive “Audio Space”, go ahead and make a folder using your name. Then, simply drag your entire session (the entire folder containing the .ptx file, audio files, bounces, Session File Backups, etc) into your folder in “Studio Share” You should now be able to access the drive “Studio Share” from any of the three rooms mentioned above. Do not record straight onto “Studio Share”! It should automatically not allow you to do so, but record into “Audio Space” first

Sound In DRS (YouTube, iTunes, etc)

These instructions must be followed in order for the Mac to play sounds through the speakers. In order to access audio from Youtube, iTunes, etc. you must select the “St 1” button located in the MONITOR section of the C24 Console. Selecting the “Sum” button in addition to “St 1” allows you to listen to audio from Pro Tools simultaneously.

d.

Now you can use the Mac’s volume controls as well as the “Control Room” knob on the C24 for your volumes. Be careful with your “Control Room” volume as the Mac will always be set at last-previously-used volume, which could result in extremely loud volumes.
